Paperclipping Play Along: Finishing An Album + My Album Overview

I'll be playing along with Noell Hyman's Paperclipping Play Along: Finish An Album in Less Than 30 Days!  First off, lets just say that's a concept that is long past due - brilliant Noell!  As a big lover of starting things; I'm happy to play along and get something finished. 

I picked an empty 3 ringed album that was in my Library of Memories and decided to make a "Home Sweet Home" album all about the renovation of our home and our family life in our home and then I picked way too many scrapbook pages from my Library of Memories to include in this Themed Scrapbook.

 

I made a couple of videos - one on ustream and another on youtube - if you want to see the whole album.  If you can't or don't want to see the videos, I show the basic set up of the album about our home which is 1. Intro; 2. Rennovation; 3. Everday Life; 4. Rooms in Our Home; 5. Funny Disasters; 6. Celebrations; 7. Conclusion.  I put the album together and then took out about 20 pages since it was huge - I plan to do more editing and also adding and tweaking the layouts that are in the album.

Here are two pages that I made years apart, but one is about playing and the other is about cleaning up but the older layout about cleaning up is kind of a mess so I added the title "Clean Up Clean Up, Everybody, Everywhere" which is a song we used to sing when the kids were small and we wanted them to clean up.

Full Bleed! Taking your photos to the Edge of the Scrapbooking Page

Taking photos to the edge of the page - what a cool little design trick that I've never really explored before - until last night!  This concept was one of the challenges in Elizabeth Dillow's Twelve Design Challenges in the Big Picture Classes I'm taking AND it was coincidentally the topic of an article I read at Get It Scrapped by Debbie Hodge (click here for the "Bleed Edge" article there).   

I was super inspired and made seven of my "half baked" pages using this technique and I gathered almost 200 examples on my Pinterest "Full Bleed" Board.   I still have about 4-5 more that I'd like to get started.  AND! I even finished one of these layouts last night!

I had that 5x7 photo from a long time ago, I had played with the colors on the computer and printed it with a focal color on her face with black and white in the rest of the photo.  The colors came out really intense and while her eyes are really very blue, they look a bit unnatural and I could never figure out how to use that particular print on a page.  While I was looking for photos to use for the full bleed approach, I figured I'd use it since I was just "practicing" this new to me concept with these pages.   

SCRAPBOOK TIP!  Having the mindset that you are just "practicing" with your pages gives you more creating freedom!  Chances are when you "practice" you'll come up with pages that you never would have otherwise and some of them you will end up adoring, like I do with this one.

(adapted from a Henry David Thoreau quote).  / You have your own unique vision and you are so sure of yourself.  You come up with the most creative ways to do things and you make observations that let us know that you are a deep thinker."

And yes, those paper strips are from my new 6x6 Amy Tangerine paper pack - the neon-ish colors worked perfectly with the overly bright focal colors on this photo.

I have been scrapbooking for a long time so it is so fun to have a new perspective, to learn something new, which has really been there all along.

I made some ustream videos while working on Project Life and December Daily - these videos are not how to videos and they are not, probably, particularly interesting.  However, if you enjoy background noise chatter about scrapbooking while you are scrapbooking, then you just might dig them.

P.S. My son listened to that last video and got a huge kick out of me whacking the Fiskars Border Punches - he giggled for 15 minutes - which sort of proves my point about being fully committed is what makes you funny  and the mistakes are what make you funny in improvisational comedy or awesome in scrapbooking - its the imperfections that are the awesome part.

Cub Scout Camping Trip & Two Page Scrapbook Layout with 18 Photos Using Circle Die Cutters

We went primitive tent camping with the Cub Scouts the weekend after Thanksgiving  and I took a zillion photos.  I did this simple two page layout and was able to fit 18 photos on the spread by cutting the photos into circles.

Lately one of my favorite scrapbooking tools is my set of die cut circles.  I have been using my circle dies so much that I have been keeping them in a small lotus bowl on my scrapbooking desk along with my QuicKutz Revolution - I am not sure they are still selling that model, so I have linked the QuicKutz Epic 6 below.  I used the circle dies to cut the photos for the Cub Scout Camping Trip 2 page scrapbook layout.  I recommend QuicKutz Cookie Cutter Dies or Spellbinders Nestabilities since both include several sizes.

Scrapbooking Bleeps and Blunders

I had this layout all pasted together when I noticed that I didn't line those yellow lines up - actually they were lined up but then one of them got to be upside down before I pasted.  Am I going to fix it? Heck NO!  / This was for the Design Your Life Class on BPS.  Good thing we're not getting graded!
