Scrapbooking Your Kid's Toys

Over the Christmas holiday, I made sure to take little snips of the packaging from my kids toys.  I stashed it away in my scrapbooking room and tried to convince my husband how that didn't qualify me to be on TLC's Hoarders.  Today I took those bits of packaging and arranged them onto a layout.  I paired them with 4 photos of my son with his toys.  I think it is ok that the toys in the pictures are only Legos but that the toy packaging show a variety of toy types. 

 I did some journaling about Christmas and what toys I think I will save for my someday grandchildren.  I also had Mac write out the title for the page.  When he saw the page he was amazed that I had all those little bits down the center and he thought they were incredibly cool.

December Daily #20

Holey Smokes, Time Flies when your kids are home for Christmas Vacation.  On the 20th, I had another stay home day with the kids and I worked on a "This Is Your Life" Album for my 91 year old father-in-law so the Play layout includes photos of toys from his childhood.  The journaling is a review of the day.  This week is whizzing by at warp speed; I'm taking a bit of time tonight to get caught up on December Daily and Project Life - more posts (hopefully) to come.

Blogging & Scrapbooking Holiday Hiatus & Party Planning

I've been missing my scrapbooking blog and actually scrapbooking.  But this time of year gets busy for me and sometimes I've been known to go on a blogging and scrapbooking hiatus.  I had a burst of productivity in October and I thought it would help me become more creative everyday, but it had the opposite effect.  I haven't done a lot of scrapbooking lately at all.  So, I'm retweaking that system and plan to report back on my retweaks.

Meantime, I have been creative in a party planning sort of way.  We have been on a party hiatus at our house.  We used to have a lot of parties - we even had a year when we had friends and family over every Friday night.  But just like the overdoing it with the scrapbooking and then resulting dry spell, we did an all to nothing thing with the parties.  I'm not a giant fan of that quote about everything in moderation, apparently.  Anyway, after a bit of arm twisting - by Charlie, my husband, not me - surprisingly - we are back into party mode.  We have three parties planned for the next month!  1. My Daughter's Birthday.  2. A Giant Christmas Party at Our House.  3. A Cookie Exchange Open House at our Office.  So I'm gearing up for the next 3 parties in the next 30 days.

My Daughter's Party has an under the sea / octopus theme - she's turning 8 and lately her favorite stuffed animal is an octopus and an octopus has 8 legs - so that's how the theme came together.  Above are pictures from my first ever attempt at paper mache and my first ever attempt at those balloons wrapped in string - I don't have the paper mache / pintata octopus painted or put together yet - but I'll post more pictures when I do. 

And yesterday, on a total whim, after a lunch meeting that happened to be next door to a pet store, I bought 20 goldfish for 29 cents each and 3 tiny lobsters (they are actually crawfish but don't call them that in front of Allison) planning to use them for party decor / goody bag take homes and Ally is completely delighted! 

Just in case you need that note translated - it came in an envelope from her special stationaryset that she received for her birthday last year - and for which she usually saves such special stuff only for Daddy - but this one was addressed to me! :

" From allison  For mom:  Dire Mom,  thank you for the Fish you are the best.  i love you so much.  the Fish are loveing the gravle.  wut cind of Fish are They.  wite it hir ->"

So I went up and told her they were goldfish - I didn't want to give the note back to her because I wanted to save it for the scrapbook! So far I've only taken 15 pictures this month - but I'm sure I'll make up for that in the next 30 days.  I'll post party pictures soon & hopefully my scrapbooking hiatus will pass soon - I am starting to miss it. 

P.S. There is a country song that goes "How can I miss you if you never go away?"  So I think it is useful and good to have scrapbooking hiatuses from time to time as the mood strikes me and I go with that flow because I know it is part of my overall creative process & when I come back to it I'll be re-energized.

Scrapbookers: How Do Edit Your Layouts Before Uploading?

I recently took the Ella Publishing Boot Camp and a few of the exercises by Maggie Holmes were instruction in PhotoShop Elements 9.  I have owned this program for a long time but I have been afraid to use it, the video instuction in the Ella Boot Camp was very informative and made me comfortable with at least going in to the program to do some more editing on my own with some of my photographs. 

Tonight I made a layout based on a Sketchy Thursdays Sketch and then edited the photograph of it in PhotoShop Elements. 

 
So my questions for you, dear blog-reader:

1. Do you upload your layouts to the internet?

2. Do you scan or photograph your scrapbook layouts?

3. Do you edit the photos of your scrapbook layouts before uploading to them your blog or internet sharing site?

4. Can you give me some tips on making my layouts look better on my blog?

Pong to Wii / Scrapbooking without a Plan

I went into my scrapbooking room without a plan tonight and turned on the video cam and started a ustream video and created this page:

 
My ustream viewers even helped me with a few of the design choices for the page so that was fun audience participation and I liked their suggestions.  Here's the video:

I found a history of Pong (click here for what I printed out on Pong and the history of video games) and printed it out and put it in the pocket along with a glossy pamphet from one of Mac's wii games.

 
Journaling:  "Me in the third grade.  You in the third grade.  I liked playing videos games just like you do now.  Technology has changed a lot since then."

I'm loving this page and the way the patterns and colors remind me of my grandparents house in the 70s and how maybe my son will see how I was a bit like he was back in the day.   Aahhh, connections.
